Bill McFarlan - Managing Director

BILL MCFARLAN  is co-founder and co-owner of The Broadcasting Business. As Managing Director, he oversees the unique style of training that has taken the company all over the world - and the crystal clear communication of the websites and audio-visual productions that have been the hallmark of the firm for the past 20 years. With Alan Douglas, he leads more than a hundred training courses each year - helping clients deal with everything from job losses and product launches to undercover investigations by Panorama.

The highlight of his Broadcasting Business career - which has taken him to the United States, Caribbean, Africa, Middle East, Asia and across Europe - has been leading the Presentation Skills training that concluded in Glasgow winning the Commonwealth Games for the city in 2014. His knowledge and expertise is based on two decades helping blue chip companies get their message across - and even longer as a presenter with BBC, Scottish Television, Sky and Setanta - where he anchored news and sports programmes from the early 1980s to the early years of the new millennium.

Alan Douglas - Director

Director ALAN DOUGLAS handles our major training projects working directly with clients who often have particularly challenging issues to deal with. He also works extensively with senior police officers and personally handles all detective media training at the Scottish Police College and for senior detectives with Strathclyde Police. Many major police and law enforcement conferences feature Alan as chairman to bring out the key issues and have them fully debated…and he is well known for his persistence in questioning Government ministers at such events.

He calls on his 30-plus years of experience at the sharp end of the media – from newspapers around the country to BBC Local Radio in England and radio and TV in Scotland, where he spent 17 years as anchor of the flagship BBC TV news programme, Reporting Scotland. In his career he has covered many major news events including the Lockerbie disaster.  As an accomplished motoring writer, he has also worked on the leading car programme Top Gear and along with his wife, Viv Lumsden, collected a BAFTA for their house design programme, The Home Show, on Scottish Television. He continues to write about motoring in newspapers, magazines and websites and is a regular broadcaster on transport issues on radio and TV calling on his personal experience as the holder of a car, bus, lorry and motorbike licence!
