2009 got off to a flying start for the Broadcasting Business with the team winning two major contracts. This year, the training department will cover all Presentation Skills courses for Scottish Enterprise staff and we’ve embarked on a three-year joint venture with Fife Council to provide communications training for senior officials.
Meanwhile we’ve been enjoying helping key NHS spokespeople refine their key messages for the Cervical Screening programme. They’re delivering the message that regular smears are essential to help prevent cervical cancer. We’ve already helped the team working on the associated HPV immunisation programme in advance of the high profile launch in 2008 which subsequently appeared in the press, on radio and television to explain more about the programme.
We’re now into the second year of our three-year programme training senior fire and rescue managers from across Scotland on how to deal with the media. These days the service deals with a wide range of emergencies, including fires, car crashes and rescues from rivers or lochs. One of their top priorities is home safety and fire prevention so we’ve been helping them to use the media to highlight the free advice they can give to keep people safe in their homes. More than a hundred managers are picking up skills on how to deal with newspaper, radio and television interviews often at the scene of a major incident.
Other projects included communications skills sessions with the Scottish Human Rights Commission, the Law Society of Scotland and Seafish, the authority which oversees Britain’s fishing and seafood industry.
