Baku Beyond
Getting the message right can often be a challenge but imagine having to hit the right note when you’re delivering the message in a foreign language? The home-based communications team at BP in Baku, the capital of the former Soviet state of Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea face that all the time, having to respond, often in their second language of English, to many requests from journalists for information about the company’s activities.
Which is why they called in the Broadcasting Business for specialist training in handling phone calls from the media, representatives of the oil industry, politicians – anyone in fact.
Broadcasting Business director Alan Douglas spent five days in the country helping the team perfect their communications skills.
“I was really impressed by their commitment and enthusiasm for the task,” said Alan on his return. ”What’s really impressive is that their command of English is first class and that’s in addition to their native language and in many cases their extra fluency in Russian and several other European languages.”
It’s the second time our specialists have been in Baku. Last year managing director Bill McFarlan ran a similar session along with another course for other BP staff in the Georgian capital Tblisi.

Au Revoir Bronson – Hello Lindsey
The end of May saw the end of an era as Bronson Forshaw – for the last seven years a senior trainer at the Broadcasting Business – moved on to pastures new.
“Bronson’s impact has been tremendous,” said Managing Director Bill McFarlan. “Whether in helping Glasgow win the Commonwealth Games, preparing for the launch of the Queen Mary 2 or getting senior Gleneagles Hotel staff ready for the G8 summit, he’s shone throughout that time. He takes with him fantastic experience – and our very best wishes.”
Lindsey Ingram – a senior news presenter at Real Radio – takes on Bronson’s role.
“Lindsey has covered some of the biggest stories of the last six years,” said Bill. “Her insight into broadcast journalism will prove invaluable.”
