The History of Lochinch house

The building began life in 1860 as the home of Mr Bateman who was the manager of the coal mines run by the Stirling Maxwell family who owned the Pollok Estate. The entrance to the mine was in nearby Haggs Road and extended as far as Balloch on the shores of Loch Lomond.

Around the start of the 20th Century it was divided in two – numbers 84 and 86 Dumbreck Road - and a few years later number 86 was the family home of Mr and Mrs Jack Balfour, an ex Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders sergeant major who was the formidable head ranger in Pollok Estate. He was very proud of his immaculate garden.

It continued to be occupied by Jack’s descendants until the Nineties – it got electricity only in 1963 - but then became semi-derelict and vandalised, eventually being burnt out. It was later restored and renovated and used as offices by a construction company before becoming the Broadcasting Business headquarters in 2003.
